Puerto marítimo (pob., est. 2000: 416.500 hab.), cerca de la desembocadura del río Oder, en el noroeste de Polonia.

En el s. X, Mieszko I anexó a Polonia este puerto que durante siglos fue un centro comercial y pesquero eslavo. Szczecin se unió a la Liga hanseática en 1360. Pasó a manos de Suecia en 1648 y de Prusia en 1720, y quedó en manos de los alemanes hasta que se traspasó a Polonia después de la segunda guerra mundial. Durante el conflicto bélico, el puerto se destruyó completamente y la ciudad quedó en gran parte despoblada. Durante el gobierno polaco, tanto el puerto como la ciudad fueron reconstruidos y actualmente Szczecin forma parte del principal complejo portuario de Polonia. Es el centro cultural de Polonia occidental y alberga varios institutos de educación superior.
